Restaurant
Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice
Bib Gourmand hawker stall at Maxwell Food Centre, serving Hainanese chicken rice with poached chicken, fragrant rice and house-made chilli since 1987.
Indian-Muslim restaurant opposite Sultan Mosque, founded in 1908 and known for stuffed murtabak and nasi biryani with its family-recipe gravy.
Zam Zam has been feeding Kampong Gelam since 1908 and stands opposite Sultan Mosque on North Bridge Road. Its name is synonymous with murtabak, a griddled flatbread folded around spiced minced mutton, chicken or beef with egg and onion, cut into squares and served with curry and pickled onions. The nasi biryani, served with a family-recipe gravy, is the other big seller.
It is a bustling, no-frills place where you order at the front and watch the murtabak being stretched and folded on the hot plate. Portions are generous, so share a medium murtabak before deciding on more. It makes an easy meal after exploring Haji Lane and Arab Street, and Bugis MRT station is a short walk away.
