Museum of Islamic Art
I. M. Pei's limestone Museum of Islamic Art stands on its own peninsula off the Doha Corniche, with 1,400 years of art from three continents.
Qatar is a small peninsula on the Arabian Gulf with a big cultural ambition. Most visitors base themselves in Doha, the capital, where the Museum of Islamic Art, the National Museum of Qatar and Souq Waqif sit alongside modern districts such as West Bay, Lusail and The Pearl. Beyond the city, the desert and coast are the main draws: the sand dunes and Inland Sea at Khor Al Adaid in the south-east, the mangroves of Al Thakira near Al Khor in the north-east, and the UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah archaeological site in the north-west. Qatar is compact, so most trips combine a few days in Doha with day trips. It is a conservative Muslim country, and visitors are expected to dress modestly in public and respect local customs.
