Attraction
Gangaramaya Temple
A late 19th-century Buddhist temple near Beira Lake that mixes Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese styles and keeps a crowded museum of donated treasures.
Sri Lanka packs a remarkable range of experiences into a compact island in the Indian Ocean. Colombo, the commercial capital, is the usual arrival point, with colonial landmarks, temples, markets and a fast-growing food scene. From there, the coast runs south to Bentota's beaches and the UNESCO-listed Dutch fort at Galle, while the Cultural Triangle inland holds the rock fortress of Sigiriya and the cave temples of Dambulla. Kandy, in the hills, is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. Further south and east are tea country, national parks such as Yala, and beaches on both coasts. Distances are short on the map but roads are slow, so allow time to travel between regions.

Most visitors use a private car and driver for flexibility, combined with scenic train journeys and tuk-tuks for short hops. Roads are slow, so plan realistic daily distances.
The west and south coasts, including Colombo and Galle, are driest from roughly December to March, while the east coast is better from around May to September, so there is somewhere with good weather most of the year.
Galle Fort and the south coast beaches, Kandy and its Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sigiriya and Dambulla in the Cultural Triangle, the tea country and national parks such as Yala are the most popular choices.
