Café
Shay Al Shoomoos
Shay Al Shoomoos is a celebrated Qatari breakfast spot in Souq Waqif, run by Shams Al Qassabi and famous for regag bread, balaleet and milky tea.
Flat White, founded in 2016 by Nasser Al-Naemi and Maryam Al-Bader, is regarded as Qatar's first third-wave coffee shop, with its own HonoRoast beans and several Doha branches.
Good to know
Flat White Specialty Coffee was founded in 2016 by Nasser Al-Naemi and Maryam Al-Bader and is described as the first third-wave coffee shop in Qatar. The founders hold Specialty Coffee Association certification, and their aim was to connect the Qatari coffee scene with the international one. Since then the business has grown to several branches across Doha, including The Pearl, Gate Mall, Tawar Mall, Centro Mall in Lusail, Al Buwairda Street, Al Hilal and two sites in Education City, and it has a counter at Hamad International Airport.
The coffee is the main reason to come. Flat White roasts its own beans under the HonoRoast name, with single origins such as a natural Ethiopian and a Brazilian honey-processed coffee sold by the bag. Expect espresso drinks and filter coffee made with care, and ask the baristas about the beans on offer that day. Each branch runs its own seasonal food menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and whole cakes can be pre-ordered. The company also runs FW Academy, with courses for home brewers and aspiring baristas.
The Gate Mall branch is a convenient choice for visitors staying in West Bay. It is at Gate 3 of the mall on Majlis Al Taawon Street and is open daily from 6.30am to 11pm, so it works for an early coffee before sightseeing or an evening stop. Allow 30 minutes to an hour. If you are elsewhere in the city, the Tawar Mall branch is open 24 hours, and the Education City branch at Multaqa, the student centre, opens 7am to 8pm and closes on Friday.
Flat White suits coffee lovers, remote workers and anyone who wants a dependable flat white or pour-over rather than a sweet, syrupy drink. It is also a good place to buy beans or brewing equipment, such as pour-over drippers, to take home.
Gate Mall is in the West Bay area, so a short taxi ride will get you there from most West Bay hotels. The Corniche is nearby for a walk with your coffee in the cooler months. For larger orders, catering and wholesale enquiries, contact the company through its website or WhatsApp line.
