Muscat Travel Guide: Things to Do, Attractions & Where to Eat

There are more things to do in Muscat than its calm, low-rise skyline suggests. Oman's capital stretches for miles along the Gulf of Oman between rugged mountains and the sea, and it blends grand modern landmarks such as the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Royal Opera House with the old port of Mutrah, its souq and corniche, and the walled royal quarter of Old Muscat, home to Al Alam Palace, the National Museum and two Portuguese forts. Beaches, mangroves and resort hotels line the coast at Qurum, Shatti Al Qurum and Al Mouj.

The food scene ranges from Omani shuwa and qabuli in heritage-style dining rooms to Indian restaurants, seafood grills, specialty coffee bars and shisha gardens, while licensed hotel bars provide most of the nightlife. Allow three to four days: two for the city sights and one or two for day trips to Nizwa, Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole, or a night in the desert at A'Sharqiyah Sands.
