Restaurant
Al Angham
Formal Omani restaurant beside the Royal Opera House, serving shuwa, harees and other national dishes in halls decorated with Omani patterns and silverware.
A popular Omani restaurant built to look like a traditional fort, serving qabuli, ursiya and shuwa from breakfast until late every day.
Good to know
Rozna is one of the most popular places in Muscat for traditional Omani food, and its building is half the attraction. The design takes its cue from Oman's old walls, forts and castles, with a grand arched main gate fitted with an iron handle made by Omani craftsmen, and inside the décor continues the heritage theme. As well as the main dining areas there are small private rooms, which are popular with families and groups.
The menu focuses on Omani home cooking. The meat qabuli, spiced mutton served on qabooli rice with the restaurant's own spice blend, is one of the signatures, and the ursiya chicken pairs creamy rice with slow-cooked chicken and local ghee. Chicken mandi, cooked over charcoal or in a tandoor and served on mandi rice, and a mixed grill round out the mains. For something sweet, finish with luqaimat, small sweet dumplings, or mandazi. Rozna also serves Omani shuwa, mutton cooked underground wrapped in banana or moringa leaves.
The restaurant is open every day from 8am to 11.30pm, so it works for an Omani breakfast as well as lunch and dinner. It is frequently fully booked, especially in the evening and at weekends, so reserve a table in advance through the website or by WhatsApp. Prices are moderate, and dishes are well suited to sharing.
Rozna suits families, groups of friends and anyone wanting a hearty, authentic introduction to Omani food. If you have never eaten qabuli or mandi before, order one of each with a mixed grill for the table, which gives a good sense of how rice and meat dishes are shared at Omani gatherings. The private rooms are a good option for larger parties and for those who prefer more privacy while eating. Dress is casual, but modest clothing is sensible. Breakfast is a quieter time to visit if you cannot get a dinner booking, and it is a chance to try a traditional Omani morning meal.
The restaurant is near the Ministry of Education building in central Muscat and is easiest to reach by taxi or ride-hailing car. Share the restaurant's location pin from its website with your driver, as street addresses are not widely used in the city.
