1. Fakhreldin
An elegant Levantine restaurant in a restored Jabal Amman villa, open since 1997 and known for its kibbeh, mezze and attentive, old-school hospitality.
View details — FakhreldinEating well is one of the great pleasures of a visit to Amman, and you can do it at every budget. Start Downtown with the classics: falafel, hummus and ful at Hashem Restaurant, mansaf and Arabic sweets at Al Quds Restaurant, and the city's best-known shawarma sandwich at Shawerma Reem on Second Circle. On Rainbow Street, Al Quds Falafel has been frying since 1966, while Sufra serves generous Jordanian home cooking in a garden villa.
Amman also has a growing number of acclaimed contemporary restaurants. Fakhreldin, open since 1997 in a restored villa, is the place for refined Levantine mezze and kibbeh. Shams El Balad serves seasonal Jordanian food from breakfast to dinner, Alee reworks childhood flavours into modern dishes, and Dara Dining offers Mediterranean plates and regional wines in a 1958 villa. Romero has served classic Italian food since 1979. Book ahead for the upmarket restaurants, especially at weekends. Lunch is the traditional time for mansaf, many families eat dinner late, and Friday is the main day off, so restaurants can be busy at Friday lunch. Service charges and tipping practices vary, so check your bill before adding a tip.
