1. Rainbow Street
One of Amman's oldest streets, running east from First Circle through Jabal Amman with cafés, rooftop restaurants, craft showrooms and city views.
View details — Rainbow StreetAmman is a city best experienced at street level and as a base for day trips. In the evening, join local families on Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman, where historic houses, craft showrooms, cafés and rooftop terraces line the road from First Circle. From there, Downtown and its souks are a short taxi ride or walk below.
The most popular excursion is Jerash, about an hour north, where colonnaded streets, theatres and Hadrian's Arch survive from the Roman city of Gerasa. Allow half a day, and note that entry is included in the Jordan Pass. To the south-west, Madaba's sixth-century mosaic map in St George's Church pairs naturally with Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land, in a half or full day. Further down in the Jordan Valley, the Baptism Site at Bethany Beyond the Jordan is visited with a shuttle and local guide, and it combines well with a swim at one of the Dead Sea's public beaches. Most visitors use a private driver, taxi or organised tour for these trips, since public transport is limited. Start early in summer to avoid the midday heat, and carry water, sun protection and modest clothing for the religious sites.
