Attraction
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Abu Dhabi's great white mosque, inaugurated in 2007, with 82 domes, four minarets, a vast hand-knotted carpet and free guided cultural tours for visitors.
The first SeaWorld outside the United States and the first without orcas, opened in 2023 on Yas Island with eight indoor realms and a vast multi-species aquarium.
Good to know
SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi opened on 23 May 2023 as the first SeaWorld park outside the United States, and the first anywhere without orcas. It is owned and operated by Miral under licence from United Parks and Resorts, and the park combines marine life exhibits, shows, rides and a conservation centre. A large part of the experience is under cover, which makes it a sensible choice on hot days.
The park is organised into eight realms that represent different oceans and habitats. One Ocean is the central hub, with a 360-degree screen and space for shows. From there you move through Abu Dhabi Ocean, Rocky Point, MicroOcean, Tropical Ocean, Arctic and Antarctica, each built around a different environment. Endless Ocean is built around a huge aquarium holding around 6.6 million gallons of saltwater, described as the world's largest multi-species aquarium. More than 150 species are represented across the park.
There are rides too, though they are not the main point. Manta is a launched roller coaster in the Tropical Ocean realm, and MicroOcean has smaller family rides such as Eel Racer, Jelly Plunge and Turtle Twist. Hypersphere 360 in the Arctic realm is a dome theatre ride. With 17 places to eat, you can easily spend a whole day without leaving the park.
Behind the scenes, Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue opened in 2023 to rescue, rehabilitate and return injured or orphaned marine animals. Its facilities include laboratories, rescue pools and a veterinary hospital, and it supports research on the Gulf's marine environment.
The park suits families with children of all ages, as well as adults interested in marine life. Allow most of a day. Opening hours change through the year, so check them on the official website and book in advance, especially during school holidays and at weekends. A light layer is useful, as indoor attractions in the UAE are often strongly air-conditioned.
SeaWorld Abu Dhabi stands on Yas Island, a short drive from Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and Yas Waterworld. A taxi from the city is the easiest way to get there. Arrive close to opening time to see the most popular areas before they fill up, and plan your day around show times. The hotels on Yas Island make it convenient to combine several parks over a couple of days.
