Thing to do
Abu Dhabi Corniche
An 8-kilometre waterfront promenade along the Abu Dhabi island waterfront, with separate walking and cycling paths, parks, cafés and a public beach.
Home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since 2009, this Hermann Tilke circuit on Yas Island offers driving experiences, karting, venue tours and evening fitness sessions on track.
Good to know
Yas Marina Circuit opened in October 2009, a week or so before it hosted its first Formula One race, the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the Grand Prix layout runs for 5.281 kilometres around Yas Island, sweeping past the marina and passing beneath the W Abu Dhabi hotel, designed by Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture of Asymptote Architecture. The circuit also has a permanent lighting system described as the largest of its kind at any sports venue. The track was reworked for the 2021 race, with several slow corners replaced by faster, more flowing sections to improve overtaking.
For most of the year, though, the circuit is not just a venue to look at. It runs a long list of experiences for the public. You can drive on the Formula One track in performance cars, with programmes built around brands such as Porsche, AMG and Alfa Romeo, or sit beside a professional driver as a passenger for a faster lap than you would manage yourself. Car owners can bring their own vehicles to open track days, and there are drag racing, drifting and driving-course sessions for people who want to learn new skills.
If you prefer something less intense, YAS Kartzone offers karting, simulators let you try the circuit virtually, and a behind-the-scenes venue tour shows you how the circuit works. The circuit also opens for fitness. Through TrainYAS, presented by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and its ladies-only sessions, you can run, cycle or walk on the track itself, which is an unusual way to see a Grand Prix venue.
The circuit suits motorsport fans, groups of friends and anyone looking for an active alternative to the theme parks. Most experiences must be booked in advance, and driving programmes can have their own eligibility conditions, so read the details on the official website before you book. Check the activity calendar for dates and times, as sessions change through the year. If you plan to attend the Grand Prix, book tickets and accommodation well ahead.
The circuit is at the heart of Yas Island, close to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld and Yas Marina with its restaurants. The W Abu Dhabi and other hotels on the island are within easy reach, and a taxi from central Abu Dhabi is the simplest way to get there. For enquiries, the circuit's contact number is published on its website.
