Hotel
Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental
Abu Dhabi's grandest hotel, opened in 2005 and run by Mandarin Oriental since 2020, with 114 domes, a 1.3-kilometre private beach and a dozen restaurants.
A design-led hotel occupying floors 18 to 33 of Capital Gate, the tower beside ADNEC that Guinness recognised in 2010 as the world's farthest-leaning manmade building.
Good to know
Few hotels can claim to be inside a world record, but the Andaz in Abu Dhabi can. It occupies floors 18 to 33 of Capital Gate, a 160-metre tower beside the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre that leans 18 degrees to the west. In June 2010, Guinness World Records recognised it as the world's farthest-leaning manmade building.
The tower was designed by the architecture practice RMJM and opened on 21 December 2011, with 35 floors in total. Because the hotel starts on the 18th floor, every room is high above the exhibition centre and the surrounding districts. Andaz is part of the Hyatt group, and the hotel offers a contemporary alternative to the grand palace hotels on the Corniche.
The location is the main practical attraction. A bridge connects Capital Gate to ADNEC, so the hotel is ideal for anyone attending conferences, trade fairs or concerts at the exhibition centre.
The hotel suits business travellers, architecture enthusiasts and couples who want something different from a beach resort. Families may prefer a property with more outdoor space. Ask for a room on a higher floor for the best views, and ask at check-in which side of the tower your room faces, and check the hotel's current facilities, restaurants and rates on Hyatt's official website when you book. Prices can rise sharply during major events at ADNEC, so book early if your dates coincide with one.
To explore, taxis are the simplest way to get around, and the Corniche and downtown are a short drive away. If you are in town for an exhibition, it is worth adding an evening at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is lit after dark, or a day at the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island. Even if you do not stay here, Capital Gate is worth seeing for its unusual angle, which is easiest to appreciate from a distance. Bring your camera, as the tower is one of the most unusual buildings in the city. For a short business trip, being able to walk to ADNEC across the bridge saves a great deal of time compared with staying downtown or on the islands.
