Why we recommend it

Lux Frágil opened on 29 September 1998 in a former warehouse on the Cais da Pedra, the riverside quay next to Santa Apolónia station, and it quickly became the most famous club in Lisbon. It was created by Manuel Reis, a central figure in the city's nightlife who had earlier opened the bar Frágil in Bairro Alto. Over the years it has hosted many of the best-known DJs in electronic music.

The club spreads over more than one level of the building. The main dance floor is the heart of the night, with a programme of house, techno and other electronic music from resident and international DJs. The roof terrace offers views of the Tagus and the south bank, and watching the sunrise from it is a classic way to end a night out in Lisbon.

Lux is a club for those who want to dance late. It typically opens towards the end of the week, from Thursday to Saturday, late in the evening, and the dance floor does not get busy until well after midnight, with nights continuing into the early morning. The programme changes every week, and some nights are ticketed events with advance sales, so check the club's website or social channels for the line-up before you go.

The door policy can be selective, especially on busy nights, so arrive in a small group, be relaxed and dress in a smart casual way rather than as a stag or hen party. Queues form after 01:00, and arriving earlier usually makes entry easier. Bring identification, as staff may ask for it at the door, and keep your phone and wallet secure on the crowded dance floor. Drinks prices are in line with other major clubs in European capitals.

The club is on the riverside road beside Santa Apolónia station, which is served by the blue metro line and by trains, although the metro does not run all night, so plan a taxi or ride-hailing car for the journey home. Alfama is a short walk uphill, and the riverside cafés and bars along the docks are a good place to start the evening. Be careful crossing the busy avenue at night.
