Good to know
Lisboa Pessoa Hotel takes its inspiration from Fernando Pessoa, the poet who spent most of his life in Lisbon and who is closely tied to the Chiado and the Baixa. The hotel is on Rua da Oliveira ao Carmo, a quiet street a few steps from Largo do Carmo and the ruins of the Carmo convent, and it is part of the Art and Soul hotel group. References to Pessoa and his writing run through the decoration, and some rooms are dedicated to his heteronyms, the alternative literary personalities under which he wrote.
There are 75 rooms in seven types, from small doubles of around 14 square metres to a 35-square-metre Unique room and connecting rooms for families with three beds and two bathrooms. Some rooms have views over Lisbon, and the room sizes are typical of a historic building in the centre, so it is worth paying for a superior or view category if space matters to you.
The hotel's restaurant and rooftop bar is called Mensagem, after the only book of poems in Portuguese that Pessoa published in his lifetime. It opens daily from 12:00 to 24:00, with an interior dining room, a lounge and two rooftop terraces that look over the rooftops of the Chiado and the Baixa towards the castle. There is also the Azure Wellness & Spa, and the hotel offers a literary walk, A Lisboa de Fernando Pessoa, for guests who want to follow the poet's footsteps through the city.
The hotel suits readers, couples and travellers who want a central, mid-range base with some personality. The location is excellent for walking: the Carmo ruins, the Chiado's cafés, including A Brasileira with its Pessoa statue, and the Bairro Alto are all within a few minutes. Guests booking directly can join the group's guest club for a discount on room rates.
The Baixa-Chiado metro station, on the green and blue lines, is a short walk downhill, and the Rossio station and the Baixa are reachable on foot in around ten minutes. Taxis can reach the street, although the surrounding lanes are narrow. Light sleepers should note that the Chiado is lively in the evenings but considerably quieter than the heart of Bairro Alto further up the hill.
Its theme and decoration are inspired by the poet, and some rooms are dedicated to his heteronyms.
