Attraction
Colosseum
The Flavian Amphitheatre, completed in AD 80 under Titus, is Rome's defining ancient monument and the centrepiece of the Parco archeologico del Colosseo.
Cardinal Scipione Borghese's villa holds Bernini's greatest marble sculptures, a room of Caravaggio paintings and Canova's reclining Pauline Borghese.
Good to know
Set inside the Villa Borghese park, this compact gallery was built to show off the collection of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, an early patron of Bernini and Caravaggio. The sculpture is the draw: Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, The Rape of Proserpina and David, and Canova's Venus Victrix, modelled on Pauline Borghese. In the Caravaggio room you will find Boy with a Basket of Fruit and David with the Head of Goliath.
Numbers are controlled, so reserve a timed slot well in advance and arrive early to collect tickets. Guided tours in Italian and English run several times a day for small groups. The gallery is closed on Mondays. Combine the visit with a walk through the surrounding gardens to the Pincio terrace.
