Good to know
The Authors' Lounge sits on the ground floor of the Mandarin Oriental's original building, the oldest part of a hotel with more than 150 years of history. Its white wicker furniture, hand-painted fabrics and leafy, light-filled atrium recall the early 1900s, and the walls are hung with photographs of famous writers who stayed at the hotel.
The main draw is a traditional afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, pastries, freshly baked scones and house-made jams, served from midday until 18:00. It is popular, so booking ahead is sensible, especially at weekends. A smart dress code applies to everyone, including children: men need long trousers and closed shoes. Arriving on the hotel's river shuttle adds to the occasion.
