Café
The Authors’ Lounge
A white-wicker tea lounge in the original wing of the Mandarin Oriental, serving traditional afternoon tea beneath portraits of the writers who stayed there.
A Thai-Chinese coffee shop founded in 1952 near the Giant Swing, serving old-style iced coffee, kaya toast and egg breakfasts in a vintage setting.
Kope Hya Tai Kee has been brewing coffee in the old town since 1952, and much of its charm lies in its vintage atmosphere and unhurried pace. It belongs to a fading generation of Thai-Chinese kopi shops, where breakfast is as important as the drinks.
The house special is a pan of fried eggs topped with seasoned minced pork and served with a crisp baguette. There is also kaya toast and roti with curry, reflecting Singaporean and Malaysian influences, plus traditional Thai iced coffee with a deep, roasted flavour. It is a good start to a morning exploring the Giant Swing, Wat Suthat and the surrounding streets. Opening times can vary, so check locally before making a special trip.
