Attraction
The Grand Palace
Bangkok's former royal residence, a walled complex of throne halls, courtyards and the revered Temple of the Emerald Buddha beside the Chao Phraya River.
An interactive discovery museum in a colonial-era building near Wat Pho, exploring what it means to be Thai through playful, hands-on exhibitions.
Good to know
Museum Siam is run by the National Discovery Museum Institute and takes a lighter approach than a traditional national museum. Housed in a handsome early 20th-century building that once served a government ministry, it uses interactive displays, games and multimedia to explore Thai identity, history and everyday culture.
It suits families and anyone who prefers to learn by doing, and it makes a useful air-conditioned break between the temples of Rattanakosin. The MRT Sanam Chai station is right beside it, so it is easy to reach even when the riverside roads are congested. Exhibitions change, so check the website before visiting to see what is currently on show, and allow around an hour and a half for a relaxed look around.
