Why we recommend it

The Golden Mount is an artificial hill topped by a gold chedi, rising above the low rooftops of the old city near the Mahakan Fort. A gently winding staircase of around 300 steps leads past small shrines, bells and gongs and shady planting to the summit terrace.

From the top there are open views across Rattanakosin to the Grand Palace spires, the river and the modern skyline beyond, which makes it one of the best free-standing viewpoints in the historic centre. Late afternoon is a good time to climb, when the heat eases and the light turns golden. Pair it with a walk along the nearby Ratchadamnoen Avenue or a visit to Wat Ratchanatdaram, and dress modestly as it remains an active temple.
