Restaurant
St. JOHN Smithfield
Fergus Henderson's influential Smithfield restaurant, founded in 1994 and known for nose-to-tail British cooking from a daily changing menu.
Founded by Thomas Rule in 1798, this Covent Garden institution serves traditional British dishes and is especially known for its game.
Good to know
Rules has been trading on Maiden Lane since 1798 and describes itself as London's oldest restaurant. Its dining rooms are lined with paintings, cartoons and theatrical memorabilia, and the menu sticks to traditional British cooking, with classic game the speciality when it is in season.
Order game in autumn and winter, or puddings and pies at other times of year, and consider a drink in the upstairs cocktail bar beforehand. Jacket and tie are not required, but smart dress is preferred and shorts or sportswear are not permitted. Children are welcome during the day but not after 19:00 if under ten. Book through the restaurant's online reservations system, especially for weekend evenings and pre-theatre slots. Covent Garden and Charing Cross stations are nearby.
