Attraction
British Museum
Britain's great museum of world history and culture in Bloomsbury, with free entry to a permanent collection spanning two million years of human civilisation.
London's Victorian bascule bridge, where a ticketed visit takes you along high-level glass-floored walkways and into the original engine rooms.
Good to know
Tower Bridge has spanned the Thames beside the Tower of London since 1894, and its two neo-Gothic towers are among the city's most photographed sights. A ticketed visit takes you up into the North and South Towers, across the high-level walkways 42 metres above the river, and down to the Victorian engine rooms that once powered the bridge lifts.
The glass floor panels on the walkways give a dizzying view of traffic and boats far below; check the published bridge lift times if you want to watch the bascules rise. Tickets can be booked up to six weeks ahead, and National Rail travellers can use 2FOR1 offers. Combine a visit with the Tower of London on the north bank, or walk on to Shad Thames and Bermondsey on the south side.
