View details — Palacio Nazarenas, A Belmond HotelMost visitors stay in or near the historic centre, where the main sights, restaurants and bars are within walking distance. The Plazoleta Nazarenas, a few minutes uphill from the Plaza de Armas, is home to some of the city's grandest hotels: Belmond Hotel Monasterio in a former monastery, Palacio Nazarenas in a palace and convent with a heated pool, and the 11-suite Inkaterra La Casona. The JW Marriott El Convento occupies a 16th-century Augustinian convent close to San Pedro Market, and Casa Cartagena offers 15 suites and a large spa near the main square.
San Blas and San Cristóbal are quieter, with more character and steeper walks. Hotel Rumi Punku, entered through an Inca doorway on Calle Choquechaca, and El Arqueólogo, with its gardens on Inca terraces, offer good value. Budget travellers will find a sociable base at Pariwana, a large hostel in a colonial manor two blocks from the Plaza de Armas. Many hotels offer oxygen-enriched rooms or heating, both worth considering at this altitude, and it is worth booking early for the busy dry season and for Inti Raymi in late June.
