Palacio Nazarenas, A Belmond Hotel
An all-suite Belmond hotel in a former palace and convent on Plazoleta Nazarenas, with oxygen-enriched suites, a heated outdoor pool and Pía León's Mauka.
A good-value hotel in a 16th-century house on Calle Choquechaca by San Blas, entered through an Inca stone doorway, with three courtyards and a garden.
Good to know
Hotel Rumi Punku is a comfortable mid-range hotel on Calle Choquechaca, on the edge of San Blas, about five minutes' walk from the Plaza de Armas. Its most memorable feature is the entrance: guests walk in through an original Inca doorway, described as one of the most classic Inca-period entrances in the city, set in a wall of fitted Inca stone.
The building itself is a 16th-century colonial house, and the hotel combines three periods: Inca stonework at the entrance and in the walls, Spanish colonial architecture inside, and modern comforts. There are three courtyards with two fountains, and at the back is a peaceful garden facing an Inca wall, a lovely spot to sit in the sun.
The hotel has 42 rooms in several categories. Standard single and double rooms come with Norwegian-style thermal duvets and local art on the walls. Superior doubles have large windows overlooking the gardens, some with balconies, bathrobes and slippers. The suite adds a living room with a balcony facing the street and a bathroom with a jacuzzi. All rooms have private bathrooms with hot water round the clock, central heating, cable television, a safe and free Wi-Fi.
There is a small spa with a Finnish sauna, a jacuzzi and massages for an extra charge, which is welcome after a long day hiking. A varied buffet breakfast is included in the rate and is served in a spacious dining room, and the hotel offers luggage storage, useful if you are leaving bags while you travel to Machu Picchu. Guides describe it as cosy and good value, and guest reviews often mention the location, staff, showers and breakfast.
Rumi Punku suits couples, families and independent travellers who want character and a central location at a moderate price. The climb up from the Plaza de Armas is short but steep, as everywhere in San Blas. Once there, you are well placed for the Twelve-Angled Stone on Hatun Rumiyoc, the San Blas church, said to be the oldest parish church in Cusco and known for its carved cedar pulpit, and the cafés, bars and workshops of the quarter.
