View details — Coffee LabSão Paulo takes coffee seriously, and its cafés range from specialty roasters to century-old counters. Coffee Lab in Vila Madalena, founded by Brazil's first barista champion Isabela Raposeiras, is a school, roastery and café focused on traceable microlots, and it opens every day. Sofá Café in the centre roasts all its own beans, uses only coffees scoring above 80 points and trains young people as baristas through its Fazedores de Café project. Um Coffee Co., with cafés in Bom Retiro and Pinheiros, goes a step further and grows its own coffee on two family farms.
For a more traditional experience, Casa Godinho on Rua Líbero Badaró, founded in 1888 and listed as intangible heritage of the city, serves coffee at the counter with its famous empadas, while Basilicata in Bixiga has baked its Italian loaf since 1914. Galeria dos Pães in Jardins never closes, with a weekend breakfast buffet and food at any hour. Many specialty cafés sell beans to take home, which make good souvenirs, and several run courses for visitors who want to learn to brew. Opening hours vary widely, so check before travelling across the city for a particular café.
