Restaurant
Schwartz’s Deli
Montreal's best-known smoked meat deli, serving its cured and smoked brisket sandwiches on Saint-Laurent Boulevard since 1928.
Normand Laprise's fine-dining restaurant, founded in 1993 and a pioneer of cooking with local, seasonal Quebec produce, now in the Quartier international.
Good to know
Toqué! is one of the restaurants that shaped modern dining in Quebec. Normand Laprise and Christine Lamarche opened it in 1993 in a 55-seat room on Saint-Denis Street, and in 2004 it moved to its current home in the CDP Capital Centre on Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle, in the Quartier international. The restaurant describes itself as a pioneer of cooking made with local and seasonal produce.
The kitchen serves French cuisine built on locally sourced ingredients, and the gastronomic menu is the way to see what it does best. Because the cooking follows the seasons, it is worth reading the current menu on the website before you book. Toqué! joined Relais & Châteaux in 2006 and has received the CAA/AAA Five Diamond Award.
When the Michelin Guide arrived in Quebec in 2025, Toqué! was listed as a recommended restaurant rather than awarded a star. The inspectors judged the food above average but not at star level, and Laprise said publicly that the description did not reflect his cuisine. Whatever your view of that debate, the restaurant's long record and its awards make it a natural choice for a special occasion.
Toqué! serves lunch from 11.30am to 1.45pm Tuesday to Friday and dinner from 5.30pm to 9.30pm Tuesday to Saturday. Reservations are made online through OpenTable, and if nothing appears to be available the restaurant encourages guests to call on 514 499-2084. Groups of ten or more use a separate booking form. A weekday lunch is a good way to experience the kitchen in a shorter sitting, and it fits easily into a day of sightseeing.
It suits couples marking an occasion, food lovers interested in Quebec produce and business diners. Allow two and a half to three hours for the gastronomic menu at dinner. Prices are at the top of the city's range, so check the menu and any wine pairing before you go.
The restaurant can also be contacted by email at [email protected], which is the best route for dietary questions or special requests ahead of your visit. Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle is in the Ville-Marie borough, which also takes in Old Montreal, so dinner can follow an afternoon at Notre-Dame Basilica or Pointe-à-Callière.
