Hotel
Rosewood São Paulo
A luxury hotel in the restored Matarazzo maternity hospital and a new vertical-garden tower near Avenida Paulista, with 160 rooms and suites and around 450 commissioned…
A five-star Oetker hotel opened in 2017 beside Parque Burle Marx, on the former estate of Baby Pignatari, with 141 rooms and a Michelin-starred Jean-Georges restaurant.
Good to know
Palácio Tangará offers something rare in São Paulo: a luxury hotel surrounded by greenery rather than traffic. It stands next to Parque Burle Marx, in Panamby, on land that was once part of the Chácara Tangará, the estate of Francisco Matarazzo Pignatari, known as Baby Pignatari. In the late 1940s he commissioned Oscar Niemeyer to design a house here with gardens by Roberto Burle Marx; the house was never finished, and part of the estate was later given to the city, which opened the park on the site in 1995.
The hotel itself has a long back story. Plans began in the late 1990s, but construction stopped in the early 2000s when the developer ran into financial difficulties. The investment firm GTIS Partners bought the site in 2013 and completed the project, keeping the arches and mouldings of the unfinished structure. The result is a five-storey neoclassical building with a symmetrical façade, opened in 2017 and run by Oetker Hotels. Anastassiadis Arquitetos designed the public areas and Bick Simonato the rooms and corridors.
There are 141 rooms, of which 59 are suites, in a building surrounded by the greenery of the park. The main restaurant, Tangará Jean-Georges, was opened with the French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and holds a Michelin star, and the Pateo do Palácio serves as a pool and cocktail bar. Facilities include indoor and outdoor heated pools, the Lancôme Absolue Spa and a fitness centre, as well as event rooms. The hotel has featured on Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List and Gold List.
The setting is the main draw. The hotel's appeal lies in its park surroundings rather than a central location, so check journey times to the sights you plan to visit. The hotel suits couples on a special trip, families who want pools and space, and travellers who prefer to retreat after a day in the city. Walks in Parque Burle Marx, right next door, are one of the pleasures of staying here.
