Why we recommend it

The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi opened to the public on 22 November 2025. Designed by the Dutch practice Mecanoo, the building covers about 35,000 square metres in the Saadiyat Cultural District, and its galleries take visitors from the origins of the Earth to the future of the planet, with plenty of attention paid to Arabia.

The main galleries run in sequence: The Story of Earth, The Evolving World, Our World, Resilient Planet and Earth's Future. Along the way you meet some remarkable exhibits. A fragment of the Murchison meteorite, which fell in Australia in 1969, contains pre-solar grains, and the fragment is described as around seven billion years old. Stan, a near-complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, is around 67 million years old, and elsewhere two more T. rex specimens are shown fighting over a Triceratops. A 25-metre skeleton of a female blue whale is on display, and five sauropods dominate the main atrium.

The regional story is a strength. Life-size models of Stegotetrabelodon, an extinct Arabian elephant, help explain how different Arabia looked millions of years ago, while side galleries look at the region's climate and at the human story. The PalaeoLab and Life Sciences Lab let you see scientific work in progress, which children in particular find engaging.

The museum suits families, school-age children and anyone interested in science, and it is easily a half-day visit; allow at least three hours if you want to see everything properly. Check opening hours and book timed tickets on the official website, and arrive early at weekends and in school holidays, when it is busiest. The galleries are indoors and air-conditioned, which makes it a good choice in the hotter months.

The museum is close to Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum and the Abrahamic Family House, so it slots easily into a cultural day on Saadiyat Island. Public bus route 94 serves the Cultural District, and taxis can drop off at the entrance. If you have younger children, a morning here followed by an afternoon on Saadiyat Beach makes a balanced day, and the museum's indoor galleries are a welcome break from the heat between May and September.
