Restaurant
Dewakan
Chef Darren Teoh's Dewakan, on level 48 of Naza Tower, became Malaysia's first two-Michelin-star restaurant with a tasting menu built on indigenous Malaysian produce.
Serving Hainanese chicken rice since 1938, Nam Heong on Jalan Sultan in Chinatown is a Michelin Bib Gourmand favourite for poached chicken and roast pork belly.
Good to know
Nam Heong is one of the best-known names for Hainanese chicken rice in Kuala Lumpur, and its branch on Jalan Sultan, on the edge of Chinatown, is the easiest for visitors to reach. The business has been serving chicken rice since 1938, and it holds a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 Michelin Guide Malaysia, which singles out good quality, good value cooking. The Michelin inspectors list it as a place to eat like a local and as good for families, which sums it up well: this is a straightforward, busy, inexpensive restaurant where the food is the point.
Hainanese chicken rice is one of Malaysia's great comfort dishes: tender poached chicken served at room temperature with rice cooked in chicken stock, chilli sauce and a light soup. Nam Heong gives you a choice of two kinds of chicken. The veggie farm chicken is leaner with firmer meat, while the free-range chicken is fattier, with softer, silkier meat. If you are with someone else, order one of each and compare.
The barbecued meats are just as popular, and the roast pork belly, with its crackling skin, is one of the bestsellers. Order a plate of the crispy Ipoh bean sprouts alongside, a simple dish of blanched sprouts that the inspectors recommend with the rice. Portions are designed for quick everyday meals, so it is easy to share several plates between two or three people and still keep the bill low.
According to the Michelin Guide, Nam Heong is open daily from 10am to 10pm, which makes it a reliable option for lunch, an early dinner or a late meal after exploring. The restaurant handles its own bookings, but most people simply walk in; expect a queue at peak lunchtime and turn over quickly. Credit cards are accepted. Note that the menu includes pork, so it is not halal.
The Jalan Sultan location puts you in the middle of the Chinatown sightseeing area. Petaling Street market, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kwai Chai Hong and Central Market are all a short walk away, and Pasar Seni station is close by for the LRT and MRT. That makes Nam Heong an easy, good-value stop in the middle of a day spent exploring the old city.
