Why we recommend it

The Museo Larco Café-Restaurant is one of the most pleasant places in Lima for a long lunch or a slow coffee, set in the gardens of the museum with a view of the viceregal mansion that houses the collection. It is a natural partner to a morning in the galleries, but you do not need a museum ticket to eat here: access to the restaurant is free, so it also works as a destination in its own right.

The kitchen serves Peruvian and international cooking, with a homemade menu that highlights regional Peruvian flavours and customs. The carta covers starters, sandwiches, main courses and desserts, along with breakfast and brunch dishes, and there are separate vegan and gluten-free menus and a children's menu, which makes it an easy choice for mixed groups and families. On Sundays the restaurant opens earlier, at 09:00, for brunch. The restaurant describes the atmosphere as romantic and welcoming.

The café is open every day, including public holidays: from Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 22:00, with last reservations at 20:30, and on Sundays from 09:00 to 22:00, with last reservations at 20:00. On 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January it closes at 18:00. Hours can change, so check before you go.

Reservations are made online, and if no tables show as available you can contact the restaurant by phone or WhatsApp to ask. Tables are held for up to two hours, with a short grace period if you are running late, and groups of more than six are seated once most of the party has arrived. A corkage charge applies if you bring your own wine or sparkling wine.

The entrance is on Navarra Street, as for the museum itself, at Avenida Simón Bolívar 1515 in Pueblo Libre. A sensible plan is to tour the museum's galleries and visible storage in the morning, when the museum opens at 09:00, then book a table for lunch at midday. Alternatively, come for dinner, as the restaurant serves until 22:00, and take a taxi back to Miraflores or Barranco afterwards. The Origen coffee roastery also has a café on Avenida Bolívar in Pueblo Libre if you want a specialist espresso nearby.
