Hotel
Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest
A luxury hotel in the Art Nouveau Gresham Palace, completed in 1906, facing the Chain Bridge across Széchenyi István tér.
A 40-room design hotel in the inner city, home to the Michelin-starred SALT restaurant and the SOLID rooftop bar.
Good to know
Hotel Rum is a 40-room design hotel on Király Pál utca, a quiet side street in the inner city between Kálvin tér and the Danube. Budapest designers and architects created the interiors, blending original features of the building with contemporary style, and the result appeals to travellers who want a hotel with personality rather than a large international chain.
The hotel is also a food destination. On the ground floor, SALT holds one Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star, the latter recognising sustainable practices. Its kitchen builds tasting menus around Hungarian ingredients and traditions, and it opens for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, from 18:00 to 23:00; book well ahead if you want to eat there, as places are limited. On the seventh floor, the SOLID rooftop bar has large windows looking over the city's rooftops, with a roof that opens in warmer weather.
Rooms have air conditioning and free Wi-Fi, and there is a lift to all floors. With only 40 rooms, the hotel feels personal, and staff can help with restaurant bookings and tips for the neighbourhood. Breakfast is served à la carte, with brunch at weekends. A 24-hour front desk, concierge service, daily housekeeping and dry cleaning complete the facilities.
Hotel Rum suits couples, solo travellers and food lovers who want a stylish, central base at a mid-range to upper mid-range price. It does not have a spa or pool, so pair it with a visit to one of the city's thermal baths if you want to relax. Even hotel guests should reserve SALT early, as it is one of the most sought-after tables in the city. Rates rise in summer and around major events.
The location is convenient for the southern half of the inner city. Kálvin tér, on metro lines M3 and M4, is a few minutes' walk away, and Ferenciek tere on M3 is also close. The Great Market Hall, Váci utca and Liberty Bridge are within about ten minutes on foot, and the Hungarian National Museum is around the corner. Across the river, Gellért Hill and the Citadella are an easy walk via Liberty Bridge or Elisabeth Bridge.
