Why we recommend it

Matild Palace occupies one of a pair of grand palaces built in 1902 at the Pest end of Elisabeth Bridge, commissioned by Archduchess Maria Klotild of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The twin buildings, known as the Klotild Palaces, frame the approach to the bridge with their towers and rich decoration. After a long restoration, Matild Palace reopened in 2021 as part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, bringing the building back to the kind of glamour it was designed for.

The hotel has 111 rooms and 19 suites, many of them with views of the Danube and Gellért Hill, and the interiors combine the building's historic features with contemporary luxury. The main restaurant is Spago by Wolfgang Puck, bringing the American chef's well-known restaurant brand to Budapest. Cova Budapest, an outpost of the Milanese café, serves breakfast, coffee and pastries all day. In total the hotel lists four restaurants and bars.

On the roof, The Duchess is a cocktail bar and liquor library with panoramic views over the river and the inner city. Guests under 18 are not admitted, so families should plan accordingly. Sunset is the busiest time, and it is worth reserving a table in advance, especially at weekends.

Matild Palace suits couples, luxury travellers and anyone celebrating a special occasion. It offers a different atmosphere from the hotels on the river at the Chain Bridge, being set at the quieter southern end of the inner city, with easy access to both the shopping streets and the Buda side. Rates are at the top of the Budapest market, and suites with river views should be booked well in advance, particularly for the summer and the December Christmas market season when the inner city is at its busiest.

Váci utca, the main pedestrian shopping street, starts at the door, and Ferenciek tere station on metro line M3 is a couple of minutes away. Walk across Elisabeth Bridge to reach Gellért Hill and the Citadella, or follow Váci utca south to the Great Market Hall. The Centrál café and the University Church are just around the corner, and the Danube embankment, with views of Buda Castle, is only a minute or two away.
