Why we recommend it

Belém Tower stands at the edge of the Tagus, where the river widens towards the Atlantic, and for five centuries it has been the image most associated with Lisbon's seafaring past. King Manuel I ordered it as part of a defensive system for the river mouth, and the military architect Francisco de Arruda built it between about 1514 and 1519. Over time it also served as a ceremonial gateway to the city, a customs post and a prison, and it is listed with the Jerónimos Monastery as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tower is a compact showcase of the Manueline style. The bastion facing the water is studded with sentry boxes topped by ribbed domes, the walls carry carved armillary spheres and twisted rope motifs, and the loggia on the upper floors shows Moorish influences. On the riverside wall look out for the stone rhinoceros, generally linked to the animal sent to Lisbon from India in 1515.

Inside, you move from the bastion, where cannons once covered the river, up through a series of rooms to the terrace at the top, which looks over the river, the 25 de Abril Bridge and the Belém waterfront. The only route between floors is a narrow spiral staircase, so there can be short waits while groups pass in the other direction. It is not suitable for anyone who struggles with steep steps.

The tower reopened on 27 May 2026 after about a year of conservation work, the first major restoration since 1998, which cleaned and consolidated the stone and upgraded the windows, structure and electrical systems. Entry now works on pre-booked time slots, with a limited number of visitors admitted every half hour, so book through the official ticket office before you travel rather than hoping for a place on the day. Allow around 45 minutes inside.

The tower is about a fifteen-minute walk west of the Jerónimos Monastery along the river. Tram 15E stops nearby, as does the Belém station on the Cascais train line. The lawns and the riverside promenade around the tower are free to enjoy, and the late afternoon light on the stone is good for photographs. Combine it with the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and MAAT along the same stretch of waterfront.
