Restaurant
Central
Virgilio Martínez and Pía León's tasting-menu restaurant in Barranco, named the world's best restaurant in 2023, built around ingredients from Peru's coast, Andes and Amazon.
The restaurant that launched Gastón Acurio and Astrid Gutsche in 1994, now in the historic Casa Moreyra hacienda in San Isidro, serving contemporary Peruvian cooking.
Good to know
Astrid y Gastón is where the modern Peruvian food movement began. Gastón Acurio and Astrid Gutsche met in Paris while studying cookery, and in 1994 they opened the restaurant in an old house on Calle Cantuarias in Miraflores. From that base Acurio built a group of restaurants that now includes La Mar, Tanta, Panchita, Chicha, Barra Chalaca, El Bodegón and Papachos, and the original restaurant remains the flagship. It later moved to Casa Moreyra, a historic hacienda house about 300 years old in the middle of San Isidro, whose history of celebrations reaches back to Peru's independence.
The cooking is described as a contemporary vision of Peruvian cuisine. You can order from the carta or take the tasting menu, which is presented as a journey through Peru's different environments in five parts, and there are separate lists for wine and drinks. The dessert menu carries Astrid Gutsche's name. Menus are published on the website, so you can check what is on before you go.
The setting is a large part of the appeal. The old hacienda has a garden and several private rooms that are used for events and family celebrations. It suits couples, families marking a special occasion and anyone interested in the history of Lima's restaurant scene, since this is the kitchen where the Acurio story started more than thirty years ago. There is also a gift shop selling items to take home as a souvenir of the house and the meal.
The dining room is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 13:00 to 22:30 and on Sunday from 12:00 to 15:30; it is closed on Mondays. Reservations are made online through the booking link on the restaurant's website, and booking ahead is sensible, especially for dinner at the weekend. The restaurant is a member of Relais & Châteaux.
Casa Moreyra is on Avenida Paz Soldán in San Isidro, a short taxi ride from Miraflores. Combine a lunch here with a walk in San Isidro, or make it the centrepiece of an evening. For a more casual taste of the same family of restaurants, Panchita in Miraflores focuses on traditional Lima home cooking.
