Good to know
Art Naji is the best-known pottery and zellij workshop in Fes, and a visit is one of the most rewarding ways to understand the craft traditions behind the city's tiled fountains, madrasas and riads. It is run by the Fakhari family, who have passed down pottery and zellij craftsmanship from father to son since 1930, and the Art Naji name has been associated with Moroccan craft since 1997. The workshop lies in the Ain Nokbi district just outside the medina, about half a mile beyond Bab Ftouh, the south-eastern gate of the old city, where many of the city's potteries and tile workshops are concentrated.
A visit takes you through the stages of production. Craftsmen and women chip tiny mosaic pieces by hand, paint designs onto plates, assemble mosaic panels and fountain backsplashes, and shape tagines on foot-driven potter's wheels. The family explains that its zellij is made from natural clay, usually from the Fes region, shaped by hand, dried and fired, often using olive pits as fuel, with the glaze applied by hand. Seeing the patience involved makes the zellij of the Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas easier to appreciate.
For a more practical experience, Art Naji offers hands-on workshops in which visitors try the craft and make their own piece, bookable through its website. These suit families with older children, couples and anyone who enjoys making things, and they are a welcome change of pace from walking the souks.
Visits end in the shop, where pottery, tagines, vases and zellij pieces made in the workshop are for sale, including custom zellij designs. The company ships worldwide with insured delivery, which removes the worry of carrying fragile ceramics home. As in any craft shop, there is no obligation to buy, but it is wise to compare prices and check shipping costs before committing.
Because the workshop is outside the walls, the easiest way to get there is by petit taxi, or as part of a guided tour of the city. Allow an hour or so for a visit, more if you take a workshop. Contact Art Naji through its website or social media to book a workshop and confirm opening times before you go.
