Restaurant
Schwartz’s Deli
Montreal's best-known smoked meat deli, serving its cured and smoked brisket sandwiches on Saint-Laurent Boulevard since 1928.
Little Italy rotisserie from the owners of Mon Lapin, slow-roasting free-range poultry on the spit, with a Michelin Bib Gourmand.
Good to know
Rôtisserie La Lune is a brasserie on rue Saint-Zotique Est in Little Italy, run by the same owners as the wine bar Mon Lapin, which is close by. It focuses on traditional rotisserie cooking, or volailles à la broche as the restaurant puts it, and the Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking.
The centrepiece is free-range poultry, slow-roasted on the spit. The Michelin inspectors describe it served with crispy fries, or with a chicken soup with raviolini. Leave room for dessert: a sablé biscuit in the shape of a maple leaf, filled with marshmallow and maple caramel. The wine list is short but carefully chosen, as you might expect from the Mon Lapin team.
The atmosphere shifts through the evening. The inspectors note that the room is family-friendly early in the service and becomes livelier later on, so families with children may prefer an early table, while couples and groups of friends can come later. There is a terrace in summer and the restaurant is wheelchair accessible.
Dinner is served from 5pm Monday to Saturday, until 10.30pm on most nights and 10pm on Wednesday, and lunch runs from noon to 2.30pm Wednesday to Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. Tables are booked through OpenTable from the website, and groups of eight or more use a separate private dining page. The restaurant also has an online shop.
It suits families, friends and anyone who wants a satisfying, good-value meal rather than a long tasting menu. Michelin places it at two on its four-step price scale, which makes it one of the more affordable ways to eat at a recognised Montreal restaurant. A meal takes about an hour and a half.
Little Italy is home to Jean-Talon Market, so La Lune is a good choice for lunch after a morning at the market. Le Petit Alep, another Bib Gourmand restaurant on rue Jean-Talon Est, is in the same part of the city if you want to try both during your stay. Call 514-948-9999 for questions about bookings, or check the website for the current menu before you go.
