Thing to do
Palais Garnier Visit
Self-guided or guided visits of Charles Garnier's opulent 1875 opera house, including the grand staircase, the Grand Foyer and Chagall's auditorium ceiling.
The flagship Paris department store, crowned by a 1912 Art Nouveau glass dome and a rooftop terrace with views across the city's rooftops.
Good to know
Even if shopping is not on your list, Galeries Lafayette Haussmann deserves a visit for its interior. The central hall rises beneath a glass-and-steel dome completed in 1912, ringed by ornate balconies and Art Nouveau staircases, while the rooftop terrace sits high above the boulevard.
From the roof, the view takes in the Palais Garnier next door, Sacré-Cœur and the Eiffel Tower. The terrace can close temporarily in bad weather, so pick a clear day. The separate Gourmet store across the street is worth a look for French food gifts, and it is just a short walk from the Palais Garnier.
