Why we recommend it

The Louvre occupies the vast former royal palace beside the Tuileries, and its collections run from Egyptian antiquities and Greek sculpture to Italian Renaissance painting and French masterpieces. Most first-time visitors head straight for the Mona Lisa, but the quieter wings devoted to decorative arts, Islamic art and Napoleon III's apartments reward anyone willing to wander.

Pick two or three departments rather than attempting the whole museum in one go. Booking a time slot online is strongly recommended, even for visitors entitled to free admission, and the Wednesday and Friday late openings are usually the calmest time to visit. Remember that the museum is closed every Tuesday.
