1. National Theatre
See opera, ballet or drama in the gilded 1880s National Theatre on the Vltava embankment, a symbol of Czech national revival with English surtitles on many shows.
View details — National TheatreSome of the best experiences in Prague have little to do with ticking off monuments. An evening at the National Theatre, where many opera productions carry English surtitles, is one of the most rewarding, and tickets in the upper galleries are surprisingly affordable. On Saturday mornings, the Náplavka Farmers' Market fills the Vltava embankment with stalls of Czech cheese, bread, sausages, beer and coffee, and is a good place for breakfast with a view of the castle.
Letná Park offers one of the classic views of the bridges over the river, with the giant Metronome on the site of the former Stalin Monument and a busy beer garden in the warmer months. For a different perspective, the observation deck of the Žižkov Television Tower looks across the whole city from 93 metres, and David Černý's crawling babies on its legs are worth seeing in their own right. Families should set aside a day for Prague Zoo in Troja, which can be reached by bus from the metro or by boat in season. Combine these with walks through outer districts such as Vinohrady, Karlín and Holešovice to see how locals live, and check opening times before you go, as several of these places change their hours with the seasons.
