City Walls of Dubrovnik
Almost two kilometres of medieval ramparts wrapped around Dubrovnik's Old Town, walkable in a full circuit with views over terracotta roofs and the open Adriatic.
Croatia stretches along the eastern Adriatic, with more than a thousand islands, clear water and historic towns that reflect centuries of Venetian, Habsburg and Ottoman influence. Dubrovnik, with its walled Old Town, is the most famous destination in the south, while Split is built around the Roman palace of Diocletian and Zadar has its sea organ. The islands of Hvar, Korčula, Vis and Brač are popular for summer sailing and beaches, and Plitvice Lakes National Park, inland, is known for its terraced lakes and waterfalls. The capital, Zagreb, offers museums, cafés and Austro-Hungarian architecture. Croatian food mixes Mediterranean seafood and olive oil on the coast with heartier inland cooking, and local wines are increasingly well regarded.
