Hotel
Park Hyatt Sydney
A low-rise luxury hotel on the water's edge at Campbells Cove in The Rocks, with 155 rooms and suites with balconies facing the Opera House.
A 69-room boutique hotel in Chippendale created from the old Clare Hotel pub and a former brewery administration building, with a rooftop pool.
Good to know
The Old Clare Hotel combines two heritage-listed buildings on the corner of Broadway and Kensington Street in Chippendale: the old Clare Hotel, a former pub, and the former administration building of the Carlton and United Breweries. The conversion keeps much of the buildings' industrial and pub history visible, with exposed brick, original features and a colourful, playful interior design. The Clare Hotel traded as a pub for many years before the conversion, and that history remains part of the hotel's identity.
There are 69 rooms in a range of types, from standard rooms to lofts and suites with names that nod to the area's history, such as the Chippendale Loft, the Showroom Suite and the C.U.B. Suite. A pet-friendly room is also available. Rooms vary considerably in layout, so it is worth comparing them on the hotel's website before booking.
The Clare Bar on the ground floor revisits the building's past as a pub and serves as the hotel's social hub, with a relaxed, neighbourhood feel. On the roof, a pool and bar serve drinks and bar snacks, giving a calm retreat above the street. The hotel also has a gym and a meeting room, and parking is available for a fee.
The Old Clare suits travellers who want a boutique hotel with character outside the main business district, as well as food lovers keen to explore Chippendale's restaurants. It is a good choice for couples and solo travellers. Broadway is a busy road, so light sleepers may want to request a room away from the street side. The hotel's location also puts it within easy reach of the inner west, including Glebe and Newtown, by bus or a short taxi ride.
The hotel sits at the entrance to the Kensington Street precinct, with Spice Alley's hawker kitchens and several restaurants on the doorstep, and Ester a few minutes' walk away. Central Park's shops and the University of Sydney are close by. Central station is around ten minutes' walk, giving easy access to the airport line and the rest of the network.
Reservations can be made through the hotel's website, by phone or by email. Ask about current offers when booking, as boutique hotels often have packages that are not shown on booking platforms.
