1. Museum of Islamic Art
I. M. Pei's limestone Museum of Islamic Art stands on its own peninsula off the Doha Corniche, with 1,400 years of art from three continents.
View details — Museum of Islamic ArtDoha's attractions are dominated by a remarkable set of modern museums and religious buildings, most of them opened since 2008. The Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar sit at the southern end of the Corniche and are easy to see on the same day, while Souq Waqif, the Msheireb Museums and the Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center (Fanar) are all within walking distance of each other in the old centre. Further out, Katara Cultural Village, the Imam Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab Mosque, Qatar National Library, Mathaf and the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum each deserve half a day.
Plan around opening days, which vary: the Museum of Islamic Art closes on Wednesday, the National Museum and the 3-2-1 museum on Tuesday, Mathaf on Monday and the Msheireb Museums on Sunday, and most museums open only in the afternoon on Friday. Book Qatar Museums tickets online before you go. Visit museums in the heat of the day and save the souq, Katara and the Corniche for the evening, when the city comes to life. Dress modestly for mosques and the souq; scarves and abayas are provided at the State Grand Mosque, and Fanar offers guided introductions to Islam and Qatari culture.
