Attraction
Kathmandu Durbar Square
The old royal heart of Kathmandu, where the Hanuman Dhoka palace, the Kumari's residence and Malla-era temples surround a UNESCO-listed square.
Nepal is a Himalayan country between India and China, home to Everest and many of the world's highest mountains, and to a rich mix of Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Most visitors arrive in Kathmandu, whose valley holds a cluster of World Heritage monuments, from the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur to the stupas of Boudhanath and Swayambhunath. Beyond the capital, Pokhara is the lakeside base for the Annapurna region, Chitwan National Park offers jungle wildlife including rhinos, and Lumbini is revered as the birthplace of the Buddha. Trekking is the great draw, whether on the trails to Everest Base Camp or around Annapurna, but Nepal also rewards travellers with festivals, mountain villages, rafting and some of the friendliest hospitality in Asia.
