Best Restaurants in Kathmandu (2026)

Kathmandu's restaurants reflect the many communities that live in the valley. Newari cooking is the local tradition, and family eateries such as Honacha behind Patan's Krishna Mandir and the community-run Newa Lahana in Kirtipur serve bara, chhoila, sapu mhicha and home-brewed rice beer at very low prices. In Boudha, Tibetan kitchens such as Mechung serve thukpa, thenthuk and momos, while House of Thakali offers a careful version of the Thakali dal bhat set that fuels trekkers across Nepal.

At the top end, Krishnarpan at The Dwarika's serves a Nepali tasting menu of up to 21 courses, and The Chimney at the Hotel Yak & Yeti keeps alive the continental dishes made famous by the hotelier Boris Lissanevitch. In Thamel, Third Eye has been cooking North Indian food since 1989 and Fire and Ice has served Neapolitan-style pizza every day since 1995. For an evening of food and dance, Utsav on Durbar Marg pairs a Nepali set meal with traditional performances. Much local food is built around buffalo meat, so vegetarians should ask about options, and booking is wise for the hotel restaurants and on weekend evenings.
