Good to know
House of Thakali opened in July 2024 in a three-storey white house, partly clad in stone, a few minutes from Battisputali Chowk in eastern Kathmandu. It is run by Ayush and Pratikshya Sherchan; Ayush was born and raised in Kathmandu, but his family's roots are in Tukuche, a Thakali village in Mustang, and a large photograph of Tukuche hangs upstairs. The aim, as Ayush told Onlinekhabar in 2025, is to raise the standard of Thakali food in the city and build loyal customers rather than chase quick profit.
The restaurant keeps a dedicated kitchen for Thakali dishes, separate from the one used for its other cuisines. Pratikshya leads the kitchen and tastes every dish, and a family food taster known as Muwa must approve dishes before they are served, so that they match what the family cooks at home.
The recommended order is a khana set with dal and mutton, or the local chicken Thakali set, served with rice, lentils, greens and pickles. Sukuti made from chyangra, the mountain goat, is a speciality, and kanchemba, the crisp buckwheat snack, is popular with diners. Mutton momo was added after customers asked for it, and online reviewers also mention crispy lamb, crispy corn and mushroom snacks. The wider menu also covers salads, noodles, soups, pizza and pasta for anyone who wants a change.
The house is designed for families. Stone water taps stand near the entrance, there are private rooms for groups, a bar, and a kids' room where children can play while parents finish their meal. Reservations can be made online or by phone, and the restaurant describes its menu as built around the legacy of a single family masala. A reviewer on its site describes the newly built house as chic yet cosy, and the restaurant also runs Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts under the same name.
One of the challenges the owners describe is keeping trained staff, as many young Nepalis leave to work abroad, and they are working with private farms to secure a reliable supply of vegetables. For visitors, the result is a careful version of the khana set in a calm family setting, away from Thamel.
