View details — Mutianyu Great WallBeyond the main monuments, some of Beijing's best experiences involve walking. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, about 70 kilometres north-east of the city, has a cable car, a chairlift and a toboggan run, and is well set up for independent visitors, with shuttle buses from central Beijing. The Ming Tombs in Changping, where thirteen Ming emperors are buried, are another popular trip north of the city, and the stone figures of the Sacred Way are the highlight.
In the city itself, the Shichahai lakes are the place to explore hutongs, take a rickshaw ride past Prince Gong's Mansion and the Drum Tower, or skate on the ice in winter. The 798 Art Zone in Chaoyang, a former 1950s factory complex, is Beijing's best-known art district, anchored by UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, which closes on Mondays. Panjiayuan Antique Market is good for browsing ceramics, calligraphy, jade and old books, and its night markets on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday add food and crafts. Allow at least half a day for each of these, and a full day for the Great Wall.
