Thing to do
1. Jemaa el-Fnaa
The medina's main square, recognised by UNESCO for its oral heritage, where juice stalls, performers and storytellers give way to open-air food stalls at night.
View details — Jemaa el-FnaaSome of the most memorable things to do in Marrakech cost nothing and need no ticket. Jemaa el-Fnaa is the obvious starting point: visit once in daylight to see the juice sellers and snake charmers, then return at dusk when the storytellers, musicians and food stalls take over and the rooftop cafés around the square fill for sunset. From there, walk north into the souks and the Mouassine quarter, where the decorated 16th-century fountain and the lanes of craft shops reward slow wandering.
The southern medina has a different character. The Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, centres on the Lazama Synagogue and is quieter than the central souks, while Bab Agnaou, the carved Almohad gate to the Kasbah, is the place to start a walk along the old earthen ramparts. For open space, the vast Agdal Gardens south of the royal palace offer orchards and reservoirs, though their opening days are limited. Wear comfortable shoes, carry small change for tips and purchases, and use an offline map, as the medina lanes are easy to get lost in.
