Virgilio Martínez and Pía León's tasting-menu restaurant in Barranco, named the world's best restaurant in 2023, built around ingredients from Peru's coast, Andes and Amazon.
A Victorian-style restaurant on a pier at the Costa Verde below Miraflores, open since 1983 and known for seafood based on the day's catch and sunset views.
Good to know
La Rosa Náutica is one of Lima's best-known restaurants for one reason above all: its setting at the end of a pier over the Pacific. It stands on rocky jetty number 4 of the Costa Verde beach circuit, below the cliffs of Miraflores, in a Victorian-style building that has been a landmark of the shoreline since it was founded in 1983 at the initiative of Carlín Semsch. Over the years it has also opened branches abroad, in Buenos Aires in 2012 and, briefly, in Bogotá from 2011 to 2013. Its history also reflects Peru's own: on 22 June 1996 it was one of several places in Lima attacked with dynamite during the country's internal conflict. In 2005 the Lima Chamber of Commerce ranked it fifth among business people's favourite restaurants in the city.
When it opened, the restaurant focused on international cuisine. Today the menu is centred on the sea, with dishes built around the day's catch and what the restaurant calls little-known marine resources, such as sierra, a fish that appears on the menu when it is part of the catch. Ask what has come in that day and order accordingly.
The real draw is the view. Tables look out over the ocean, and the restaurant promotes its sunsets, so book for late afternoon if you want to see the sun go down over the water. The building has several spaces: the main dining rooms, El Muelle, the pier itself, the Bar Espigón for a drink, and El Patio and private rooms that are used for family celebrations and corporate events.
It suits couples, families celebrating an occasion and visitors who want a classic Lima experience by the sea. The website handles reservations for the different spaces, but it does not publish an address, phone number or opening hours, so book online and check times when you do.
To get there, take a taxi down to the Circuito de Playas, the coastal road at the foot of the Miraflores cliffs. Combine dinner here with an afternoon walk along the malecón and Parque del Amor above, and you will have seen Miraflores from both the top and the bottom of the cliffs.
