Why we recommend it

The High Roller is the giant observation wheel at the heart of the Strip, and a ride is one of the easiest ways to see the whole of Las Vegas at once. It opened on 31 March 2014 as the centrepiece of The LINQ, the Caesars Entertainment development across Las Vegas Boulevard from Caesars Palace. At 550 feet, it rises well above the surrounding resorts, and it has become a landmark of the Center Strip skyline.

The wheel carries 28 cabins, each designed to hold up to 40 passengers, and a full rotation takes about 30 minutes. Caesars promotes the ride for its 360-degree views, and from the top the view takes in the length of the Strip, the resorts below and the wider valley. The rim is lit with around 2,000 LEDs that can show colours, moving patterns and special displays for holidays and events, so the wheel itself is part of the night-time view from the street.

Caesars also offers an optional Happy Half Hour experience, which is popular with groups and couples marking a celebration; check the booking page for what is included and any age rules. Standard rides suit families, and children usually enjoy the slow climb and the chance to pick out landmarks along the Strip. If you are nervous about heights, the movement is slow and steady, and the cabins are fully enclosed.

Timing makes a big difference. Daytime rides give clear views of the desert and mountains, while a ride around sunset lets you see the city change as the lights come on. Night rides show the Strip at its brightest. Book ahead online for a specific time if you are visiting at a busy period, and check the official page for current hours and ticket options before you go. Allow about an hour in total, including queuing and boarding.

The wheel's size takes some getting used to: each cabin is large enough for 40 people, so you will usually share with other riders. If you are travelling as a group or celebrating, check the booking page for group options and the Happy Half Hour before you choose a ticket.

The wheel is part of The LINQ development on Las Vegas Boulevard, directly across from Caesars Palace, so it is easy to walk to from the central resorts. It pairs well with an evening watching the Bellagio fountains or dinner along the promenade.
