Hotel
Riad Fes
A Relais & Châteaux hotel in a restored 14th-century palace in the medina, with two pools, a spa, a rooftop terrace and the Gayza restaurant and…
A boutique riad in the former summer palace of Pacha El Mokri, with an Andalusian garden, a residents' pool, a historic hammam and the Fez Café restaurant.
Good to know
Le Jardin des Biehn is built around one of the most attractive gardens in the medina of Fes. The riad occupies the former summer palace of Pacha El Mokri, and it was opened in 2010 by the Biehn family, originally from Provence, who restored the buildings while keeping their old architecture. The result feels like a private estate hidden inside the old city, with an Andalusian-style garden at its centre and a pool reserved for residents.
Rooms and suites are spread across the property in several categories, from standard rooms to junior, senior and royal suites, so the riad can suit couples as well as families. The hammam is particularly special, as it occupies the former bathhouse of the Pacha. It operates all year, with a massage room and treatments based on natural products, and sophrology sessions are also offered.
The riad's restaurant, Fez Café, is one of the best-known places to eat in the medina and is open to non-residents as well as guests. Chef Hicham Moufid cooks a daily menu based on what is in the market, mixing Mediterranean flavours with Moroccan traditions, served indoors or on a terrace among the plants. On Saturday evenings there is a dinner with Arabo-Andalusian music. Staying here means one of the city's most pleasant tables is just across the garden.
The riad is on Akbat Sbaa in the Douh area of Fes el-Bali, so the souks and monuments of the old city can be reached on foot. Cars cannot reach the door, so arrange your arrival with the riad, which can help with luggage from the nearest drop-off point. The contact page on its website includes access information.
Le Jardin des Biehn suits travellers who value greenery and calm as much as history, including families who will appreciate the garden and pool. Because the restaurant and hammam are on site, it is also an easy base for travellers who want to spend part of each day resting rather than sightseeing, which helps in the heat of summer. The riad has several phone lines, including a separate number for Fez Café, so check the website before calling. It is a good choice for longer stays, when the garden becomes a welcome retreat between days in the souks. Book ahead, and reserve a table at Fez Café on your first evening.
