Why we recommend it

Lisbon Walker describes itself as the first company to run walking tours in the city, and it has been guiding visitors since 2005. Its team also started Lisbon's first private walking tours, and over two decades it has built up a wide range of themed routes. It is a good choice for travellers who want a structured introduction to the city's history from local guides, rather than exploring the hills alone with a guidebook.

The regular programme is in English and runs every day. Three walks form the core. The Revelation Tour is the company's introduction to central Lisbon and its history. Lisbon Old Town, Alfama and Mouraria, explores the two oldest neighbourhoods, with their medieval lanes, churches and links to fado. Lisbon City of Spies takes its theme from the city's reputation for espionage when Portugal was neutral during the Second World War.

Regular tours start at 10:00 every day, with an additional City of Spies departure at 14:30 on Fridays. They meet at Praça do Comércio, at the door of the Ask Me Lisboa tourist office under the arcades in the north-west corner of the square. Book online through the company's booking links or by WhatsApp. If a tour has no bookings by the day before, it may be cancelled, so it is best to reserve in advance rather than turning up. The company runs in all weather and is closed only on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.

Beyond the regular walks, Lisbon Walker offers private tours on more than twenty themes, which usually start under the Rua Augusta Arch or at your hotel in the city centre. There are also experiences such as Lisbon Tastes and Sensory Lisbon, city games for groups, tours for schools, day trips to Sintra, Arrábida, the Alentejo and the Sado estuary, and walks in Porto. Tours are also available in French and Portuguese on request.

Walking tours in Lisbon involve hills, cobbles and steps, so wear comfortable shoes with good grip, carry water in summer and bring a light rain jacket in winter. The tours suit adults and older children who are happy to walk for a few hours. Contact the company by email or WhatsApp to discuss private options, accessibility or family-friendly routes before booking.
