Singapore's first Hindu temple, established by 1827 on South Bridge Road, crowned by a six-tier gopuram covered in painted deities.
Good to know
Built by Indian settlers by 1827, Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple and was declared a National Monument in 1973. Its six-tier gopuram, the entrance tower over South Bridge Road, is crowded with painted plaster figures of Hindu deities, and the colourful interior includes a shrine to Draupadi, the central figure of the annual Theemithi firewalking festival held about a week before Deepavali.
Remove your shoes before entering and dress respectfully. The temple closes in the middle of the day, opening from 7am to noon and from 6pm to 9pm, so plan around those windows. It sits a short walk from Chinatown MRT station and just along the road from the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.
